Ten years later he was working as an apprentice fitter to Edward Langley Fardon. In 1914 he enlisted into the Coldstream Guards where he served during the war years until 1919. During 1920 he married Hannah Helena Constance Field at Ufton on 3 February. They had five children together and he worked as a fitter at a motor car manufacturer. He died three years after his wife on 12 July 1977 aged 86 at Sycamore Old Peoples Home in Leamington Spa. His family home address was still 4 The Bank.
