Alfred Abel Wardell was born in 1861 and baptised in Cubbington on 23 February 1862. The eldest of the seven children of Thomas and Mary Ann, he lived in Stoneleigh from the time when the family moved to the village in about 1870.
On 14 November 1887 he married Frances Rebekah Hortin at Stoneleigh and they went on to have three daughters and a son. When Alfred died in Warneford Hospital on 15 August 1933 the Leamington Spa Courier reported that he had been a bell-ringer at Stoneleigh for 39 years; he had also been a collector for the Warneford Hospital Weekly Scheme and an employee of the Warwick Rural District Council for 31 years.

Frances, nee Hawtin or Hortin, who had been born in Hornton, Oxfordshire in 1866, died on 20 March 1939.
