Grave photoEdith Smith nee Greasly / Greasley Edith Mahala Greasly (or Greasley) was born on 29 May 1896 to Lenford Greasly and his wife Rose. The birth was registered in Ashby de la Zouch but the family actually lived in Coalville, Leicestershire. She was one of eight children born in the family although two died young. Her father was initially an iron turner but, being in the centre of the Leicestershire frameworking (hosiery) industry, he became a frame fitter. In mid-1916 she married Sydney Smith and they had two daughters. In the 1939 register they are recorded as living at small holdings next to the Baginton Oak Hotel in Baginton; she was assisting her husband in running the small-holding. He was a coal dealer; their daughter Dorothy was working as an operator on a Burroughs machine (an early adding machine) at an aircraft factory. Edith's final address was 4, The Almshouses, Stoneleigh. She died on 5 October 1974 and was buried at Stoneleigh on 9 October. Her husband had died in 1955.
