B14.1

Grave drawing
Grave photoFrederic Loisel was born in Southampton yet married Cecile (maiden name unknown) in Paris in 1824, when he lived in the Rue Rivoli. By the 1841 English census he was a servant to Viscount Gage and his family in Whitehall Yard near Westminster Abbey. Both his wife and daughter Adelphine Uranie were at the same address, a prestigious one as Viscount Gage went on to play a significant role in the Crimean War. By 1851 Frederic had become House Steward at Stoneleigh Abbey, where he remained until his death on 27 February 1863. He was buried on 4 March, having lived with his wife Cecile at the Old Lodge (the Gatehouse). They had looked after their grand-daughter Aimee Delagarde who lived with them until her untimely death at the age of 14 (see B 13.3). It is possible that her mother Adelphine was working elsewhere as a governess. The whereabouts of Aimee's father are unknown. When Frederic died in 1863 Cecile was granted £100 by Lord Leigh and allowed to stay on at The Gatehouse until Midsummer's Day that year. She lived until 1877, though by 1871 she was lodging in Leamington and died in Shepherd's Bush, London, probate being granted to her daughter Adelphine, who was living with her. His tombstone reads:
In memory of F. Loisel who departed this life at Stoneleigh Old Lodge on the 27th February 1863 aged 66 After having faithfully fulfilled the duties of house steward to the Right Honourable Lord Leigh during the space of twelve years, we submissively committed his spirit into the hand of his maker, firmly trusting in the merits of his saviour. He is gone. I must resign him He rests in better hands than mine Once again I hope to join him In the realms of bliss divine. --------------------....-------------------------- This stone has been erected by an afflicted wife to the remembrance of a most affectionate husband and father
