Grave drawing
Grave photoThis headstone lies flat and appears to have been moved from its original position. Nathaniel Bennett was born in 1809 in Coventry and died on 17 June 1851; according to his headstone he was in his forty-second year. He was buried on 20 June 1851. He was in Stoneleigh by 1830 as he witnessed the marriage of his sister Eliza to Joseph Lee in that year, a fellow witness being Elizabeth Horton. Nathaniel and Elizabeth were to marry on 25 August 1835 at Stoneleigh. Their son Charles, who is also commemorated on the stone, was baptised at Stoneleigh on 30 June 1839. The family's connection with Stoneleigh seems to have been brief but important to them: they were in Thomas Street, Coventry in the 1841 census, where Nathaniel was a bricklayer, and in 1851 when they lodged in Bailey Lane at the Provident Dispensary. The druggist of the dispensary, Arthur Mercer, gave evidence at Nathaniel's inquest, as he had died suddenly of apoplexy. Young Charles died aged just 17 on 27 February 1857 and was buried on 2 March. What became of Elizabeth is currently unknown.
