Grave photoLeslie and Gladys Trietline (nee Garton) Gladys May Trietline nee Garton was born on 24 December 1912 in Nottingham. Her parents were Frederick and Mary Ann (nee York) and she had two older brothers. When she married Leslie Trietline on 7 October 1939 at Lincoln Register Office, the newspaper announcement noted that she was connected with swimming and water polo events; her bridegroom was said to be one of the best-known swimmers in the county, having been half-mile swimming champion the previous year, and a prominent water polo player. In one of very many newspaper articles detailing his swimming successes he was described as Trietline the Unbeatable. Leslie Trietline came from Skegness and in 1934 had travelled to Australia where he lived until 1937, working in the tailoring trade as a salesman. This was his principal profession as he advertised in Lincolnshire newspapers as a "Ladies' and Gents' tailor" .By the time of his marriage to Gladys, however, he worked at least temporarily as a lathe operator since in the UK 1939 register he is shown with this occupation, living with Gladys and her parents at their home in Lincoln. He had been born on 9 December 1912 in Boston, Lincolnshire, the son of Charles and Emily Trietline nee Wortley. From the late 1950s until the early 1970s Leslie and Gladys lived at 58 Kenilworth Road Coventry, but from 1971 until his death he lived at 19, Stoneleigh Road. Leslie died on 19 September 1979 and was buried on 25 September. Gladys survived until August 2006. Her death was announced in the Stoneleigh & Ashow News as "late of Stoneleigh" since she had been living in Hereford, where her son Christopher lived. The L.Trietline Cup is still awarded each year at the Kenilworth Show for the best exhibit in Floral Art.
