Grave photoUna Thorley was born on 13 March 1908 and baptised on 3 May. She was the youngest child of John and Maria Thorley nee Wallbank. The family were well known in the village as John was the village policeman. Una's three brothers all served in the Great War and her brother Samuel Ernest died as a result of wounds received at Gallipoli. In 1939 she was living with her widowed mother Maria at Stone Cottage in The Square and she was working as a shorthand typist. Una worked as a Personal Assistant at the Dunlop as well as being a piano teacher and secretary to Stoneleigh's vicar, the Reverend Peter Gooderick for several years. She died on 18 January 1985 after having played a huge part in village life, particularly for the church. She was employed as headmaster's secretary at Stoneleigh School and was secretary for the PCC as well as being a churchwarden for six years.
