John Allen Ellwood was born on 20 October 1914 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He married Audrey Edith Robinson in early 1941, in Coventry; she had been born, with a twin brother, on 3 February 1915 in Clophill, Bedfordshire. They had a son, David, born in 1948. When he died on 15 May 1987 at the age of 72, John was living in Styvechale. Audrey died many years later, on 27 April 2002, aged 87.
