Grave photoDoris Marson was born on 12 January 1901, one of the four children of George Robert Marson and his wife Hannah. In the 1901 census the family lived at 41 Widdrington Road in Radford, Coventry, where her father was a gas engineer; ten years later he had become a gas and electrical engineer and the family had moved to Friars Road. In 1928 Doris married Thomas James Carpenter, in Coventry. He was the son of Thomas Carpenter and his wife Louisa nee Calcott (her sister Amy Elizabeth married into the Kerby family, see B1.22). Thomas senior was a licensed victualler and the family lived at various addresses on the Foleshill Road, where at one time they kept the General Wolfe Hotel. By the time of the 1939 register, Doris and her husband lived at South Winds, Cryfield Grange Road. They had had a son, James Grant, in 1933, and they lived with Thomas' widowed mother Louisa who lived on private means. Thomas was at this time an assistant in the petroleum industry and worked as a member of the observer corps for the war effort. By the following year they were living at 61, Stoneleigh Road, Earlsdon. When Doris died on 3 March 1982 at the age of 81 her address was 1, Leighton Close, Gibbet Hill.
