Grave photoCatherine Anne Craine was born on 30 December 1922, the daughter of William A Craine and his wife Mary Catherine (nee Simpkin) who is buried here in an unmarked grave. Catherine had a younger sister, Janet, who was born in 1938 and died in 2004. The Craines were a much-loved and well-known family in Stoneleigh for many years, keeping the post office and shop, and from 1952 running a cafe and catering business from their property at 1, The Green.The Stores became a sub-post office from 1942-1977. Catherine, known as Nan, served in the W.R.N.S. for five years from the age of 18, reaching the rank of Petty Officer, followed by five more years on reserve.After leaving the Navy she was commissioned in the WRAC as a Lieutenant. She held many positions within Stoneleigh village life, becoming secretary and then president of the W.I. She was also secretary and poppy organiser for the British Legion, secretary of the village hall committee,a United Charities trustee and for 18 years a parish councillor. She died aged 66 on 29 October 1988 just seven years after her mother Mary Catherine who had died aged 86 at the end of 1981. They had moved from The Green to 14, Birmingham Road.
