B5.18

Grave photoFrank Ernest Grant and Vera Clark Grant Frank Ernest Grant was a dearly-loved and greatly-respected schoolmaster at Stoneleigh for some years. He was born on 27 August 1901 in Southam, where his father was a baker. He was baptised there on 29 September, the son of John Thomas Grant and Catherine nee Evetts. He had four siblings. He was just 17 when his mother died in 1918. Frank married in Devon, on 3 December 1927. His bride was Vera Clark (or Clarke) Canton, the daughter of John Canton a police officer in the Metropolitan Police, and his wife Alice. She had been born in East Stonehouse, and their marriage was registered in the district of Plymouth. They had three sons, Colin, Keith and Ian. In the 1939 register they lived at the schoolhouse in Ladycross near Werrington in Cornwall, where Frank was a schoolmaster. They must have been there for six years as their second two sons' births are registered in the district of Launceston. Frank died, sadly, before his retirement, on 22 November 1966. Schoolchildren at Stoneleigh purchased a school clock in his memory. Vera died on 4 June 1980, at which time she was living at 11, Birmingham Road.
