Grave photoJohn Leslie Victor Dexter was born in Birmingham in 1896, the son of John Henry and Gertrude Grace Dexter nee Wilkes. His father worked in the hotel business and by 1911 he was living with his grandmother Ellen in Handsworth, where she kept a boarding-house; he was working as an accountant's clerk. He joined the 9th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment and after being discharged as medically unfit in July 1916 he received a war pension. He lived with his mother and grandmother Ellen Wilkes (see B6.3) while Grace was steward of Finham Golf Club, and married Isabel Winifred Lambert at Stoneleigh on 24 January 1923, with whom he had one son, John Richard Lambert Dexter, who is also commemorated along with his father. Later helived at Highcroft, 20 Fieldgate Lane, Kenilworth and became secretary of the Standard Motor Company; he died on 22 July 1937 aged just 40. His son John, born on 11 November 1928, died in 1991 in Worcester aged 62. He had married Zanta M French in 1965 in Christchurch, Hampshire, but little more is known about him at present.
