William and Mary Gumbley
The left hand side of this headstone commemorates Mary Gumbley, and the right her husband William, who died eleven years after her.
William Gumbley was born in 1751 to William and Mary Gumbley nee Watt. His father was from Stoneleigh and his mother from Coventry, but they had been married in Ashow earlier that year. William himself married Mary Snead at Stoneleigh on 12 October 1779; they went on to have eight children. William appears several times in Jurors' Lists, living at Broad Lane within Stoneleigh parish, and he died in 1829. He died on 14 january and was buried at Stoneleigh on 18 January; his age in the register is given as 78, as it is on his headstone.
Mary was born in 1753 but her parentage can only be guessed at, partly because of variant spellings of her surname. She died on 12 June 1818, and the Parish register notes that she and her husband were farmers from Broad Lane.
