Joseph Sammons
Joseph Sammons was the son of Thomas Sammons and his wife Sarah nee Hands. One of nine children, he was baptised at Allesley on 28 November 1754, the register stating that they were from Stoneleigh. When Joseph's sister Sarah was baptised in 1756, the Stoneleigh register gave the family residence as Fletchamstead Hall; this property was run by the Sammons for at least three generations.
He was married to
Mary Rotherham (
D 20.1) on 3 November 1785 at Coventry St Michael's. Six children are recorded from the marriage, though their first, William, baptised in 1786, seems to have died in infancy since another William was born in 1803.
Joseph died on 16 September 1823 and was buried at Stoneleigh on 19 September.
Mary outlived her husband by five years: she died on 7 February 1828 and was buried at Stoneleigh on 11 February.
[The Sammons/ Rotherham/Phillips families not only interlinked in life, but are buried close to one another in this section of the churchyard.
As stated above, Mary Sammons nee Rotherham was the daughter of John Rotherham, whose brother
Thomas Rotherham is buried at
D 14.6. Her husband Joseph Sammons farmed at Fletchamstead Hall and after his death, their son Thomas Sammons took over the farm. He,
Thomas, is buried with his wife and daughters at
D 19.1. Mary's sister
Catherine Rotherham married
William Phillips, a Coventry maltster; they and their family are buried at
D 16.7.
In addition, one of Joseph and Mary's daughters,
Catherine Sammons, married her cousin
Edward Phillips; they and three of their daughters are buried at
D 14.5, and their son
George Septimus Phillips is buried at
D 14.4.]
