William Henry Wells and Clara Eunice Wells nee Walton
William Henry Wells was the eldest of the three children of Henry Wells, a master bootmaker of Queen Street, Cubbington, and his wife Jane. He was born on 10 August 1871 and baptised at Cubbington on 24 September. Evidently showing promise from a young age, he began employment as the new master of Stoneleigh School on 9 January 1893 when he was just 21 years old. His sister Edith, too, became a teacher, beginning her career as a pupil teacher under her brother's guidance at Stoneleigh, and then progressing to Whitelands Training College before teaching at Cubbington National School. On 1 June 1898 he married Clara Eunice Walton at Stoneleigh, and they had two daughters, Edith Nellie and Eunice Mary. They lived at The Old Vicarage in Stoneleigh, and William was Head of Stoneleigh School for a total of thirty-nine years, retiring in 1933. He died on 23 May 1955.
Clara Eunice Walton was born on 20 January 1873 in Ashow and baptised there on 3 April, one of the seven children of James Walton and Lucy nee Freeman, the long-established carpenter's family. Three of her brothers are buried at Stoneleigh, in
B1.18,
B2.3 and
C1.9. She became the Sewing Mistress at Stoneleigh School whilst her husband was Headmaster.
She died on 23 December 1947.
