B5.11

Grave photoAnn Powell nee Dixon was born in 1871 in Harborne, Birmingham. Her father Joseph was a mechanic. She was married when just seventeen, (although the marriage register gives her age as twenty-one) to Raynor Adams, the son of John Adams and Sarah nee Ward, on 21 October 1888 at St Mark's Church in Birmingham, and they had five children - three boys and two girls. Unfortunately Raynor died in 1919 when only 55, and the eldest son, also called Raynor, had been killed in 1915 in the Great War. She remarried in 1922, her husband being Francis H Powell. Nothing further is known about him at present, although he may have been a wheelwright. In September 1939 a Francis H Powell was living in Ladywood, Birmingham, as a retired wheelwright; on the date of the register Ann, however, was living at Rose cottage, Stoneleigh, with her daughter Annie May, who had married Ernest King, and their daughter Rhoda. (Rhoda was to marry Denis Ruck in 1941.) Ann died on 5 June 1959, and may have been living in the Almshouses. Her daughter Annie and son-in-law Ernest are also buried in the churchyard (B4.10), as are her grand-daughter Rhoda and Rhoda's husband Denis (section D?). Ann's other daughter Gladys Dorothy married Harry George Mills and they lived at 16, Birmingham road, Stoneleigh; they, too, are buried in the churchyard (B7.5) ) as is their daughter Joyce Birditt. Thus three generations of the family are buried here.
